Pickleball on Oʻahu

Most of the island’s pickleball is free: city park courts, first come first served, usually with lines painted but no net — bring a portable one. The paid options are one indoor club downtown and a resort on the North Shore. Here is where to play, what it costs and how the courts work.

How the city courts work

  • There are no pickleball-specific city rules yet. Parks & Recreation drafted new outdoor-court rules in 2023 (45-minute limit when others wait, set hours for lessons), but they have not been finalised, so the old tennis-court rules apply. Source
  • On a tennis-lined court: 45 minutes from when you take the court if others are waiting, wait your turn in person, no back-to-back periods while others wait. Source
  • Most courts have permanent pickleball lines but no permanent net. The city says so itself: bring a portable net unless the court is listed with one. Source
  • Individuals cannot reserve city courts. Reservation permits go only to nonprofit organisations, and never more than half the courts at a complex of four or more. Source
  • The city counts about 198 lined courts at 96 parks. Its own table and text disagree on how many are dedicated (28 or 36). Source

Clubs, lessons and gear

  • Oahu Pickleball Association

Nonprofit club, $25 a year. Runs leagues and tournaments, and a free Meetup group that posts open-play sessions at Petrie, Kaimukī, McCully, Ala Moana, Mother Waldron, ʻEwa Mahiko, Keʻehi Lagoon and Diamond Head.

  • Association lessons at Diamond Head

Group classes in 4–6 week sessions on weekday afternoons, from complete beginners up. Private or semi-private with a coach $80 an hour for 1–4 people, paddles and balls included.

    Visit ↗
  • Clinics at Pickles at Forté

Pickleball 101, a beginner skill builder and guided beginner open play, weekly. Prices not published.

    Visit ↗
  • Paddles

Loaner paddles at the association’s Petrie sessions and included with lessons and Turtle Bay court rentals. Waipahu Racquet Shop (1831 S King St) stocks pickleball gear.

  • No city court publishes open-play times; the ones we mention come from the association’s Meetup and change week to week.
  • Diamond Head’s lights are “yes” on one city page and “no” on the other.
