The five stages, and what each one is for

Diamond Head Theatre (Makapuʻu Ave, by Kapiʻolani Park) does the big musicals: this season opens with Fiddler on the Roof (Sep 25–Oct 11), then How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Nov 20–Dec 6), Into the Woods (Jan 22–Feb 7), Suffs (Mar 12–28) and The Pirates of Penzance (May 21–Jun 6). Five shows, each a two- to three-week run. Manoa Valley Theatre is the smaller, more adventurous musical-and-play house — Jagged Little Pill (Sep 10–27), Rocky Horror closing on Halloween, Peter Pan Goes Wrong, the Pulitzer-winning Purpose, The Producers, and two Hawaiʻi-written shows (Folks You Meet in Longs, Once Upon One Kapakahi Time) before Shakespeare in Love closes the season next August. Eight productions.

Kumu Kahua Theatre on Merchant Street stages only plays about Hawaiʻi — new work, in Pidgin and English, by local writers. Three shows on our calendar: The Queen's Will, Kupua, and a trilogy of short Hawaiʻi plays in January. Honolulu Theatre for Youth at Tenney Theatre is the family stage: eight productions from September to May, $15–$30, starting with Anime Momotaro. And the Hawaii Theatre is the touring house — comedy (Felipe Esparza, Paula Poundstone, Josh Johnson, Hasan Minhaj & Ronny Chieng), Whose Live Anyway?, magic, The Moth, David Sedaris — 29 events through February.

A note on prices and dates

Two of the five theatres — Diamond Head and Manoa Valley — publish ticket prices only inside their ticketing systems, not on the season page a search engine sees. So on those listings you'll find the run dates and a “see listing” where a price would be, rather than a number we made up. HTY prints $15–$30 and we show it. Every run on this page was read off the theatre's own season announcement; when a theatre adds a show we add it, and when one closes early we pull it. For evenings that aren't theatre, the Oʻahu after dark guide covers the rest, and live music has its own page.
