Every other list ranks Honolulu cafés on how good the coffee is. That is not the question you have when you are carrying a laptop. The question is whether you can sit there for two hours. This guide is organised by neighbourhood and built from what each café publishes itself — starting with an admission about what that does and does not cover.
We checked 28 cafés on Oʻahu. Not one publishes anything about wifi, power outlets or how long you may sit at a table — not on its website, not on its socials. Every “ample outlets, fast wifi” line you have read was written by someone else about a visit on one day, and most of those articles are years old.
So this guide does not print outlet counts. What it does print is the thing that actually decides your morning and that most guides get wrong anyway: when the place is open, straight off the café’s own site, and whether it still exists.
The other way to answer it is to go. So we have started doing that, and the 2 cafés below carry what we saw ourselves — wifi or no wifi, and whether the room is bearable in August. That is first-hand and marked as such, not scraped from anywhere.
Island Brew on University Ave or at Ward — 7am to 7pm, seven days. Nothing else here stays open that long.
Morning Glass up in Mānoa, or Talk Kaimuki — a single room of roughly 3,600 square feet, which absorbs a crowd better than anywhere else here.
Kakaako Cafe until 9pm Monday to Saturday, or Kai Coffee at the Alohilani until 9pm every day.
Everything else on this page is checkable. This part is not: it is where we drink, and we are saying so out loud so you can weigh it accordingly. The trade is that you also get the two facts no café on the island publishes — whether there is wifi, and whether the room is bearable on a hot afternoon.
3408 Waiʻalae Ave #103
NO WIFIThe coffee. A rotating multi-roaster programme — Olympia, Heart and Black White Roasters — which is a real commitment rather than a slogan, and it shows in the cup.
Working there. No wifi at all, so bring a hotspot. In exchange the air conditioning is the best of anywhere we work, which on an August afternoon decides more than the coffee does.

WIFIThe coffee. Very good, and the reason we keep going back rather than the plants.
Working there. Wifi, which is rarer here than it should be. Air conditioning is limited - it is a nursery, so expect it warmer than an office - but it is still a good room to work in for a few hours.
That is a short list, and it got shorter — TRY Coffee was on it until it closed. If you work somewhere that deserves to be here, or you know whether one of the other 20 has wifi — tell us and we will add it with your name on the observation if you want it.
The single most useful table here. 7 of these open at 6:30am or earlier, 6 stay open to 7pm or later, and 2 publish no hours at all.

The best bet if you want a table and a room designed for sitting in. Closest to the studios, and the SALT block puts three within a two-minute walk.

The default Kakaʻako laptop café, and the one most often recommended locally. A third-party blog claims free wifi and parking validation; Morning Brew itself publishes neither, so ask at the counter.

This is the old Coffee Talk, open since 1995, relaunched under a new name by the same owner — café by day, cocktail bar Thursday to Saturday night. Guides that still say “Coffee Talk” are years out of date.
Seating. A large single room — roughly 3,600 square feet, so it absorbs a crowd better than anywhere else here.
Ring first. Publishes no hours on its own site. Third-party reporting says 6am–4pm daily, bar Thu–Sat evenings.

Started as a truck and became a shop. Coffee stops at 2pm and the room turns into a wine bar in the evening, so it is a morning place and unapologetic about it.

Closes at 1:30pm and does not open at weekends at all. It serves the office towers, so it empties the moment lunch ends.

A working roastery on the Iwilei edge of Chinatown, Black-owned, founded in 2015 by a Peet’s-trained roastmaster. Open seven days and from half six on weekdays, which almost nothing else downtown is.
Seating. A small sitting area out front with water views. Dogs welcome.
Ring first. Two addresses are in circulation and both are right — it is a corner building. Marin Street is the door. Google’s blurb saying they have roasted for twenty years contradicts their own site, which says 2015.

A small bright storefront in the historic McLean Block, with books on the shelf to read in and dogs photographed and welcomed. Their own line is “the fastest you’ll ever feel like a regular”, which is roughly what people say about it unprompted. Open seven days.
Ring first. They publish nothing about wifi, outlets or seating, and it is a small room. Customers describe a couple of tables and some single seats with power — that is customer testimony, not the shop’s word.

The best coffee downtown, and the shop other café owners here name as their own benchmark. A compact bar built around made-to-order single origin, Japanese-style iced coffee and ceremonial matcha. 4.9 across more than two hundred ratings.
Ring first. It is on this page for the coffee, not for the desk. A customer reports a table limit of about an hour and twenty minutes, and few outlets. The shop publishes nothing either way, so treat it as a tasting bar you visit rather than an office you occupy.

The most searched, and the worst for actually working. Almost everything here is a hotel lobby café serving a queue of guests — fine for 40 minutes, wrong for a morning.
150 Kapahulu Ave (Queen Kapiʻolani Hotel lobby)
Every day 6am–4pm (happy hour 2–4pm)
The pick of the Waikīkī hotel cafés because the terrace is genuinely a room rather than a counter. Open-air means no glare control, so a matte screen helps.
Seating. Their own site describes “open-air terrace seating” — so plan for outdoors, sun and wind.

The far east side, and worth the drive for exactly one thing — a covered patio on the marina, open at six in the morning.
377 Keahole St, in the Hawaii Kai Shopping Center
Daily 6am–6pm
Opens at six, earlier than anything else in this guide, and sits on the marina with the Koʻolau behind it. The busiest of their four shops by a distance — the others are Ward Village, Ala Moana and the new one opposite UH in Mānoa.
Seating. A covered patio on the waterfront.
Ring first. It is in the Hawaii Kai Shopping Center by Safeway, not Koko Marina Center across the highway, which is where half the internet sends you. Their Mānoa branch publishes three different closing times across its own two pages, Google, and a sign in the window — ring that one before going.

All seven of these are still being recommended by Honolulu café round-ups that nobody has gone back and checked. If you have a list open in another tab, this is probably where it is wrong.
32 N Hotel St, Chinatown
Still open — and no longer a coffee shop, which is why it has come off the list above. Its own site now describes it as a red brick oasis by day and a cocktail bar by night, and mentions coffee nowhere. It opens at 10am at the earliest, and not at all on Sunday or Monday. Every laptop-café roundup that still lists it is working from a 2022 article.
825 Ilaniwai St, Kakaʻako (front of HiClimb)
Permanently closed. Nothing online has caught up: its own site still lists events and Yelp still shows it trading, which is exactly why it will keep turning up in coffee roundups for months.
1200 Ala Moana Blvd, 2nd floor (Ward)
Permanently closed, confirmed locally. The plant-filled outdoor terrace is why it still turns up on every Kakaʻako coffee list, and its own site went down before the doors did — so nothing online is going to correct itself.
2700 S King St, Mōʻiliʻili
Permanently closed in August 2024 after nearly two decades. It was the laptop café in Honolulu, which is why it is still on so many lists.
3601 Waiʻalae Ave, Kaimukī
Not closed, but no longer trades under that name — it is now Talk Kaimuki, same address, same owner, plus a bar at night.
Bishop St and Merchant St, Downtown
Both downtown locations closed.
999 Bishop St, Downtown
Closed.

No longer listed on Kai Coffee’s own locations page. The Waikīkī branches are unaffected.
Hours, addresses and photographs come from each café’s own website, and every row carries the date it was last checked. Where a café contradicts itself — Plantoem publishes two different sets of hours on two of its own pages — we say so and tell you to ring, rather than picking one and hoping.
Closures are the hardest part to keep right, and the part everyone else gets wrong. A café’s website usually outlives the café, and the listing sites take months to catch up — TRY Coffee is the current example, still shown as open almost everywhere. The only reliable signal is somebody local saying so, which is why the closed list below is the section we most want you to correct.
