Oʻahu on screen: six drives to the real places

Jurassic Park’s valley, the Lost crash beach, Hawaii Five-0’s headquarters and the lighthouse from 50 First Dates — 32 film and TV locations on Oʻahu you can visit, in six drives around the island.

A lot of what Hollywood filmed here is private ranch land, military base or sacred ground. We say which places need a tour, which you can only see from the road, and which to leave alone.

locations you can visit

The short answer

Most of Oʻahu’s famous film locations are on the windward side. Kualoa Ranch — Jurassic Park, Jurassic World, Lost, Kong and Jumanji — is private and can only be seen on a tour, from about $60. Across the road, Kualoa Regional Park is free.

Free to visit: the Byodo-In Temple area, Turtle Bay, Waimea Bay, Mokulēʻia Beach (Lost’s crash), Aliʻiōlani Hale (Five-0’s headquarters) and the Makapuʻu lighthouse trail (50 First Dates). Diamond Head and Hanauma Bay need a reservation. Haʻikū Stairs and Hālona Cove are closed — don’t go.

The drives

Each one is in order on the ground. “Add this to my plan” puts every stop in Your plan; Maps opens the whole drive on your phone.

Don’t go

Filmed here, but private, closed or unsafe. Not on any of our routes.

Places to leave off your list

  • Haʻikū Stairs (Stairway to Heaven). Closed since 1987 and being removed; people are still arrested for trespassing.
  • Kualoa’s valleys without a tour. Private ranch land and a sacred place — the tour is the way in.
  • Hālona Cove (“Eternity Beach”). Signed “Do Not Enter”; there have been drownings. The lookout above is the view.
  • YMCA Camp Erdman. The Others’ barracks from Lost are an active youth camp. Contact the camp before any visit.
  • Cast and character houses. McGarrett’s house, Lucy’s house in Waikāne and the Magnum estates are private homes.
  • Military land. Hickam, Schofield, Wheeler, Mākua Valley and the Fort Kamehameha housing were all filmed — none are open.
  • Heʻeia Kea jungle and the Nuʻuanu bamboo forest. Private. The public Judd Trail in Nuʻuanu has bamboo too.

Manners

Kualoa is sacred

It was a puʻuhonua, a place of refuge; canoes lowered their sails passing it. Call the islet Mokoliʻi.

Cemeteries are cemeteries

Byodo-In and Punchbowl are places of mourning first. Quiet voices, no climbing on graves.

Pearl Harbor is a war grave

The USS Arizona memorial is where more than 900 sailors are still entombed.

Wildlife

Ten feet from sea turtles, fifty from monk seals — both rest on Turtle Bay’s beaches.

Kapu signs mean no

A spot on a fan map is not permission. If a sign says private or kapu, turn around.

Myths

Mix-ups other lists repeat.

What you’ll readWhat’s true
Forgetting Sarah Marshall was filmed at Ko ʻOlinaMost sources, and the film itself, put it at Turtle Bay on the North Shore.
You can hike to the Jurassic Park valleyKaʻaʻawa Valley is inside Kualoa Ranch. It is tour only.
Haʻikū Stairs reopenedThey are closed and being taken down.

Closed, moved or paused

Still on other lists, but not worth the trip.

Robin’s Nest, Waimānalo

The original Magnum P.I. estate was demolished in 2018; the house in the new series is private.

The Hukilau Café from 50 First Dates

Was a set at Kualoa and has been taken down. The real Hukilau Café in Lāʻie only lent its name.

Lost’s beach camp at Papailoa

The set is long gone and the land behind the beach is private.

Paradise Park, Mānoa

Lost’s bear cages are in a closed park.

How this page was made, and who made it

We read film-location sites, the official pages for every paid stop, local press and the itineraries people share publicly, then checked each address against at least two of them in October 2026. Lists and maps other people made were used to see which places come up again and again — none of their writing is copied here.
