Photo spots

The views that end up on every Oʻahu feed, and how to get them without trespassing.

Oʻahu’s best-known views are mostly easy to reach: a crater rim, a few lookouts and some of the most photographed beaches in the world.

Some viral spots are closed or illegal to reach, and this list leaves them out.

Questions people ask

Can you still climb the Stairway to Heaven (Haʻikū Stairs)?

No. The stairs were closed for years and have since been removed. Trespassing to reach them brings heavy fines.

When is the best time for photos on Oʻahu?

Sunrise on the east and windward side (Lanikai, Makapuʻu), sunset on the North Shore and west side.

Do I need a permit to fly a drone?

Drones are banned in many state parks and reserves, including Kaʻena Point and Hanauma Bay. Check the rules for each park.
