The guide
How to do it: Jurassic Oʻahu beyond the ranch
Away from Kualoa, the Jurassic places on Oʻahu are free or easy to visit. In Honolulu, Jurassic World filmed its hotel lobby at the Hawaiʻi Convention Center, its petting zoo at the Honolulu Zoo and its ending in a Pearl Harbor hangar. The boys' leap from a waterfall is placed at Mānoa Falls.
Fallen Kingdom's arrival on Isla Nublar was shot on the North Shore, where Dillingham Airfield was the jungle landing strip and Papailoa Beach the ruins of the old park. Jurassic Park III used the same airfield for its Isla Sorna landing. On the east side, Makai Pier and the Hālona cove complete the set.
- The order to do it in
- Day one: Honolulu. Start at Mānoa Falls early, then the Honolulu Zoo and the Convention Center, and finish at Pearl Harbor. Day two: either the North Shore (Papailoa Beach, then Dillingham Airfield at the end of the road) or the east side (Hālona, then Makai Pier).
- When to go
- Mānoa Falls first thing, before the rain and the crowds. Pearl Harbor from opening. Do the North Shore in the afternoon, and avoid big winter swell days at the beaches.
- Getting there
- You need a car for the North Shore and the east side. In town, the Convention Center and the zoo are in walking distance of Waikīkī. Ford Island is reached only by the shuttle from the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.
- What to bring
- Shoes that can get muddy for Mānoa, a phone and wallet only for Pearl Harbor (no bags), and water for the North Shore.
- What it costs
- Mostly free. You pay for the zoo, the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum and parking at Mānoa Falls.
Worth knowing
- Pearl Harbor doesn't allow bags. Bring only what fits in your pockets, or pay for storage.
- Car break-ins happen at North Shore pull-offs. Leave nothing in view.
- Don't swim at Mānoa Falls: the water can carry leptospirosis and rocks fall.
