The guide
How to do it: Jurassic valley: Kualoa Ranch
Kualoa Ranch covers three valleys: Kualoa, Hakipuʻu and Kaʻaʻawa. Kaʻaʻawa is the one the ranch calls Jurassic Valley. The Gallimimus ran across it in 1993, and later films built sets there. You can only see it on a ranch tour, and each tour covers different spots.
After the tour, stay on the windward side. Kualoa Regional Park is free and right next door. Fallen Kingdom's dock and jungle scenes were shot at Heʻeia, twenty minutes south. On the drive back to town you pass the Makai Pier, where Jurassic World's ferry arrives, and the Hālona lookout, below which Fallen Kingdom's heroes wash ashore.
- The order to do it in
- Do a morning tour at Kualoa first: Kaʻaʻawa Valley, then Moliʻi Fishpond if your tour or package includes it. Have lunch at Kualoa Regional Park. Then drive south to Heʻeia Kea harbor and Heʻeia State Park, and go home along the east coast past Makai Pier and Hālona.
- When to go
- Book a morning tour. The cliffs get the sun early and the afternoon brings more cloud and rain. Tours run rain or shine and sell out, so book ahead.
- Getting there
- You need a car, or the ranch's paid Waikīkī pickup for the tour part. From Waikīkī it is about 45 minutes to Kualoa over the Likelike Highway or H-3. Park free at the ranch visitor center.
- What to bring
- Closed-toe shoes, a light rain jacket, sunscreen and a camera. Food isn't allowed on the tour vehicles, and drones aren't allowed on the Jurassic Adventure tour.
- What it costs
- Ranch tours run $59.95 to $149.95 for adults, plus 4.712% tax. The beach parks, the harbor, Heʻeia State Park and the lookouts are free.
Worth knowing
- The Jurassic Adventure tour is the one with the paddock, bunker and Gyrosphere station. The cheaper Movie Sites tour does the log and the Godzilla footprints.
- The Jurassic Adventure tour is bumpy. The ranch doesn't advise it for anyone pregnant or with back or neck problems, and the minimum age is 3.
- Kualoa is a sacred place, once a puʻuhonua (place of refuge). Call the islet off the park Mokoliʻi, and don't climb it.
