Hawaii Nature Center
An environmental education nonprofit at the mouth of Makiki Valley, ten minutes above downtown, running keiki nature camps out of the trailhead where the Makiki Valley loop begins. Camps are the main thing they publish: week-long day sessions for ages 6 to 11 built around a theme — arthropods, native birds, whales, zero waste — with the valley itself as the classroom. Sessions sell out well in advance and members get first refusal, so the useful move is to watch the registration date rather than the camp date. Scholarships are available for Title One students and families in need.

Fall Break Camp: Amazing Arthropods
Oct 5 – Oct 9
A five-day nature day camp in Makiki Valley over the October school break, 5 to 9 October, 8am to 3pm, for ages 6 to 11. This session is about arthropods — the insects, spiders and crustaceans that outnumber everything else in the valley — and it is taught outdoors on the Makiki trails rather than in a classroom. Hawaii Nature Center camps consistently sell out, and members get a fortnight's head start on registration, so a general-public booking this close in is not guaranteed. Scholarships exist for Title One students and families in need.

Winter Break Camp: Native Wings

The first of two winter-break nature camps at Hawaii Nature Center, 21 to 24 December, 8am to 3pm, ages 6 to 11. Native Wings is the birds week — Hawaiʻi has one of the highest rates of endemic bird species anywhere, and also one of the worst extinction records, which is the story the valley is used to tell. It runs four days rather than five because the centre is closed on Christmas Day. Members registered from August, so general-public places are the ones left.

Winter Break Camp: Wondrous Whales
Dec 28 – Dec 31
The second winter-break camp at Hawaii Nature Center, 28 to 31 December, 8am to 3pm, ages 6 to 11. Whales is the right theme for the date — koholā, the humpbacks, are arriving in Hawaiian waters through December, so the camp lands in the middle of the season it is about. Four days, closing before New Year's Day. Same format as the rest of the centre's camps: outdoors in Makiki Valley, small groups, all equipment provided.
